Vinnufossen is the tallest waterfall in Europe and the sixth tallest in the world. The water drops around 860 metres in several tiers down the mountainside near Sunndalsøra, with its longest single drop measuring roughly 420 metres.
The waterfall is fed by Vinnubreen, the largest glacier in Møre og Romsdal county. This means the falls are at their most impressive in late spring and early summer when the glacier melts rapidly. By late autumn, the flow can slow to a thin veil.
The falls are visible from the road through Sunndalen valley. A closer view requires a short walk from a pull-off along the valley road. On clear days, the white ribbon of water against the dark mountainside is striking even from a distance.
