Vigatunet

90 minutes
Between Fister and Hjelmeland you'll find Vigatunet, a historic cluster farm that's now part of the Ryfylke Museum. Written records trace the farm back to the 14th century, but finds on the property go much further, including burial mounds from the Viking Age and artefacts from the Stone Age.

The farmyard as it appears today dates from 1821, when the buildings were last rearranged. The oldest structure is the smokehouse, believed to be from the 1600s. You'll also find a dwelling house, cookhouse, storehouse, barn, corn mill and a traditional boathouse. The roofs are covered with local slate, which is typical for this area.

In 1990, a historical orchard was opened within the old garden walls, now home to over 100 trees representing traditional apple, pear and plum varieties from the Ryfylke region. Hjelmeland has strong fruit-growing traditions, and this garden preserves varieties that might otherwise be lost.
