Varingskollen rises above Hakadal in the Nittedal valley, offering Oslo's closest proper alpine skiing. The ski area has a FIS-approved giant slalom course called Olaløypa that drops 350 metres over 1,250 metres, steep enough to host international races, just 25 minutes by train from the capital.

The mountain got its own railway stop on the Gjøvikbanen in 1932, originally called Løvstad. Generations of Oslo families have taken the train up for a day on the slopes. In summer the same hills serve as a hiking and mountain biking area in the Nordmarka forest that stretches north from Oslo.
