Tromsø Museum - The Arctic University Museum

90 minutes
Tromsø Museum is the oldest museum in northern Norway, founded in 1872. It is now part of UiT, the Arctic University of Norway, and officially called UiT Norges arktiske universitetsmuseum since 2019.

The museum covers the natural history and culture of northern Norway and the Arctic. Permanent exhibitions include Sámi culture, northern lights science, Arctic geology, and the wildlife of northern Norway. The Sámi section is particularly good, with clothing, tools, and information about Sámi history and contemporary life.

It sits in the southern part of Tromsøya, near Telegrafbukta, and can be combined with a walk to the beach. Allow about 90 minutes. It is more of a local knowledge museum than a tourist attraction, which is exactly why it is worth visiting if you want to understand the region rather than just photograph it.
