Straumen

60 minutes
Straumen is the administrative centre of Inderøy municipality, a small village built beside the narrow tidal strait that gives the place its name. Straumen means "the current." The strait connects the almost enclosed inner basin Børgin to the main Trondheimsfjord, and tides force water through it four times a day. At change of tide the current can be strong and it reverses direction, which gave the village its name.

The village is the hub of the Den Gyldne Omvei scenic route on Inderøy and home to most of its cultural stops: Nils Aas Kunstverksted, Muustrøparken, and Sakshaug gamle kyrkje a few minutes' drive away. The sentrum has a bakery, small shops, some cafés, and a marina.

Old timber houses survive around the strait, including Ringstu, one of the oldest houses in the village. Inderøy's municipal coat of arms, four gold flounders on a red field, was drawn by sculptor Nils Aas, who grew up here. The flounder refers to the flatfish once caught in numbers from Børgin.

Parking is easy. An hour is enough for a walk around the strait and the park. Allow half a day if you want to add the museum and lunch.
