Storelgen: The World's Second-Tallest Moose

10 minutes
At the Bjøråa rest stop near Atna, a 10.3-metre stainless steel moose gleams by the side of Rv3. Designed by sculptor Linda Bakke and erected in 2015, Storelgen was built with a serious purpose: to combat driving fatigue on a long, monotonous stretch of road through the forest. It is the world's second-tallest moose sculpture, beaten only by a 10.9-metre rival in Stor-Elvdal's Canadian twin municipality. Stor-Elvdal holds the record for the highest moose density in Norway, so the statue is not just for show. Collisions with moose are a real hazard on Rv3, particularly at dawn and dusk.
