Stiftsgården

30 minutes
Stiftsgården is one of the largest wooden buildings in Northern Europe: 140 rooms spread over 4,000 square metres. It stands on Trondheim's main street, a short walk from the central square.

It was built between 1774 and 1778 as a private residence for Cecilie Christine Schøller, a wealthy widow. The style sits between Rococo and Neoclassicism: the facade is restrained, but the interior details are ornate. After her death the building changed hands several times before the state bought it in 1800 for 10,000 rigsdaler.

Since 1906 it has been the official royal residence in Trondheim. The royal family stays here during visits and for consecrations at Nidarosdomen. Four coronations and two consecrations have been hosted from this building.

Guided tours run in summer and give access to the main rooms. The building is not always open, so check in advance.
