Sandnes sits at the head of Gandsfjorden, immediately south of Stavanger, and the two cities have long since grown into a single urban area. Historically a pottery and bicycle town, Sandnes is now one of Norway's fastest-growing municipalities, driven by the energy sector. The long pedestrian street Langgata runs through the centre. For visitors, Sandnes mainly serves as the northern gateway to the Jæren coast and its beaches, and as the location of Vitenfabrikken, one of the Jærmuseet science centres.
