Sakshaug gamle kyrkje

30 minutes
Sakshaug gamle kyrkje is a medieval stone church on the Inderøy peninsula, consecrated in 1184. That makes it one of Norway's oldest surviving stone churches, built at the same time as Nidaros Cathedral down in Trondheim. Stone-carver marks on the walls here show kinship with the cathedral, meaning some of the same masons worked on both buildings.

The church is no longer the active parish church. It stands today as a museum church, owned and maintained by Fortidsminneforeningen, the Norwegian Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments. The society also looks after Hustad kyrkje further north on the peninsula.

The setting is a rise with wide views over Inderøy. The building is still used for weddings and for concerts during the summer.

Opening hours are limited. In summer it is open to visitors on Sundays. Guided tours can be booked year-round through Fortidsminneforeningen Inderøy.
