Rosendal is a village of 877 people on the southern shore of the Hardangerfjorden, administrative center of Kvinnherad municipality and gateway to Folgefonna National Park. Despite its size, the village punches well above its weight. Baroniet Rosendal, Scandinavia's smallest castle, was built in 1665 after the wedding of Danish nobleman Ludvig Rosenkrantz and Norwegian heiress Karen Mowat. It remains Norway's only barony. The Kvinnherad stone church nearby dates from around 1250 and was likely the central church of this region during the Middle Ages.
Shipbuilding shaped the village for over a century. The Skaaluren yard, founded in 1855, built roughly 300 vessels over its lifetime. But an earlier yard on this shore built the sloop Gjoa in 1872, the vessel Roald Amundsen sailed through the Northwest Passage in 1903 to 1906, the first transit in history. The Skaalurensamlinga museum preserves this heritage.
Since 2016, Rosendal hosts a chamber music festival founded by pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, one of Norway's most acclaimed classical musicians. The Folgefonn Centre at the harbor has interactive exhibitions on geology, climate, and life in the Hardangerfjord. The Folgefonna glacier sits only 10 kilometres east, and guided glacier walks are available in summer. Rosendal is accessible by car via Rv48 or by express boat from Bergen.
