Ropeid

60 minutes
Ropeid is the narrow strip of land between the Sandsfjord and Vindafjord. The name is said to come from the old days when people communicated by shouting across the water. In Norwegian, "rope" means to shout. This was supposedly how news travelled between the two sides before there were roads.

Until 2015, this was a busy ferry terminal. When the Sandsfjord Bridge opened, the car ferry stopped running and the quay was left with large empty asphalt surfaces. The National Tourist Route programme decided to repair the landscape rather than abandon it.

The waiting room, called Venterommet, was built in 2004 by architects Jensen & Skodvin. It has large glass walls that bring the fjord and mountains inside. Today it serves as an open library and venue for cultural events.

In 2021, furniture was added to the quay area. The stools and tables look like clusters of mushrooms and are made from recycled plastic boats from Ryfylke. At night they glow, lighting up the waterfront. The express boats to Sauda and Stavanger still call here, so the quay has found a new purpose.
