Rød Herregård is an 18th-century manor house a short drive west of Halden centre. It was built by the Tank family, who made their fortune in the timber trade. At a time when logs from the border forests were among Norway's most valuable exports, the Tank family controlled much of the trade flowing through Halden, and they spent accordingly.
The main building is a grand wooden manor in late baroque style, filled with period furniture, paintings, and decorative arts. The interior gives a good sense of how the timber barons lived, a world apart from the workers who felled and floated the logs.
The grounds are the real highlight. The English-style landscape park is large and well maintained, with old trees, ponds, and walking paths. It is open year-round and free to enter, even when the museum is closed. On a summer day it is one of the more pleasant places to walk in the Halden area.
The museum inside the manor is only open in summer, typically June to August. Check opening times before visiting. There are also occasional concerts and cultural events on the grounds during the season.
