Norwegian Petroleum Museum

90 minutes
The museum that explains why Norway is wealthy. A modern building of stone, glass, and concrete on the harbour, covering roughly 5,000 square metres of exhibits about offshore petroleum activity and its history in Norway.

The displays include full-size equipment and models of platforms, a film about the mindset at the start of the oil age featuring well-known Norwegian actors, and exhibits tracing the story from the first discoveries in the 1960s to the present. It is more engaging than the name suggests.

Norway's approach to petroleum wealth, channelling it into the Government Pension Fund (the world's largest sovereign wealth fund), is one of the country's most distinctive political decisions. This museum provides the context for understanding how a small country of five million people ended up with over 1.5 trillion dollars in savings.
