Narvikfjellet

Narvikfjellet is one of the few ski resorts in the world where you can ski with a view of the ocean, the fjord, and the open sea, all at once. The slopes sit on the north and west face of Fagernesfjellet, directly above Narvik town centre.

A 10-seater gondola, opened in 2019, takes you from 220 metres to the mountain restaurant at 659 metres in about four minutes. It runs year-round and carries 1,600 people per hour. From the top, there is a panoramic view over the Ofotfjord, the surrounding peaks, and on clear days, all the way to Lofoten. A chair lift continues to 1,000 metres for those who want to go higher.

In 2029, Narvik will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the first time this event takes place in Norway. Narvik won the bid at the FIS Congress in Reykjavik, beating Val Gardena in Italy 11 votes to 8. It is the world's second largest winter sports event after the Winter Olympics. Venue construction and upgrades are underway, with completion planned for 2027. For a town of 22,000 people above the Arctic Circle, this is a massive undertaking.

Even in summer, the gondola is worth the ride for the view alone. The cafe at the top is open year-round. There are also plans to expand the facility with hiking and mountain biking trails.

Weather Tip

The view from the top depends entirely on the weather. On a cloudy day, you may see nothing. Check conditions before buying a ticket.
