Mosvik museum

45 minutes
Mosvik museum is a small volunteer-run village museum in Mosvik, on the west side of Skarnsundet. The main building is Grande skole, the local school from 1866.

The museum runs a new themed summer exhibition each year. Permanent features include a 1950s schoolroom with a continuously running film of interviews with villagers, a blacksmith's workshop with tools from the village smith Ole Gjerde, and a small croft under restoration showing a typical 1930s to 1960s interior. A neighbouring meeting house is also a handicraft outlet.

Two self-guided culture trails start from the museum. One is 4.5 kilometres through Mosvik centre with 34 information posts, opened in 2022. The other, 2 kilometres through Selsetvika and Venneshamn, has 32 posts covering rock carvings, burial mounds and old trade houses. Both have English summaries and QR codes.

The museum is open in summer and on request. It is typical of the small village museums found all over Norway, the kind that survive on a handful of dedicated volunteers. Worth a stop if the local history interests you.
