Moskenes is a very small village near the southern tip of Lofoten. Its main function is the ferry terminal connecting the islands to Bodø on the mainland. The crossing is operated by Torghatten Nord. The direct route takes about three and a half hours. An alternative route stops at the outer islands Værøy and Røst.
The ferry terminal has a small heated waiting room and public toilets, but not much else. There is a campsite nearby. In summer, the ferry can be fully booked, especially for cars. Booking in advance is strongly recommended if you are travelling with a vehicle.
The name Moskenes also appears in Moskenesstraumen, one of the world's strongest tidal currents. It runs in the strait between Moskenøya and the island of Mosken. The maelstrom was described by Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne, though their accounts were considerably more dramatic than reality.
