The Marinemuseet was founded in 1853, making it one of the oldest naval museums anywhere. It sits inside the old Karljohansvern base and documents the full history of the Royal Norwegian Navy, from the age of sail through torpedo boats and submarines to modern frigates.
The collection includes decommissioned vessels, among them the submarine KNM Utstein, which visitors can board and explore. Ship models, paintings, and a naval library of some 25,000 volumes round out the holdings. It is a compact museum, easy to visit in about an hour, and works well as part of a larger walk around the Karljohansvern area.
