Maridalen

60 minutes
Maridalen is a valley north of Oslo that most tourists never see. The lake Maridalsvannet at the head of the valley is the main source of Oslo's drinking water, and the surrounding area is strictly protected to keep it clean. There are no motorboats, no swimming and no activities that could pollute the water supply.

The valley has been farmed since the Middle Ages. The ruins of Margaretakirken, a medieval stone church from around 1250, can still be seen near the lake. Several working farms remain in the valley, and the landscape of open fields, forests and the river Akerselva — which begins here and flows all the way down to the fjord — feels remarkably rural for a place still within city limits.

Maridalen is a popular recreation area for locals who come here to walk, cycle or ski in winter. The road through the valley ends at a turning point near the lake, making it a natural out-and-back trip from the city centre. It is an easy drive or bike ride and offers a completely different experience from the urban parts of Oslo.
