Levanger

60 minutes
Levanger is a small town on the Trondheimsfjorden, about 80 kilometres north of Trondheim. It looks quiet and ordinary today, but this has been a trading place since the Viking Age.

The town's identity is tied to Marsimartnan, a market fair that dates back to the 13th century. The fair died out but was revived in 1989 and is now held every year in February. It is one of the oldest recurring markets in Scandinavia. Levanger received town status in 1836, was nearly wiped out by a devastating fire in 1846, and rebuilt. The wooden town centre that survives today has protected heritage status.

Levanger is one of the best agricultural areas in Trøndelag, and paper manufacturer Norske Skog built its very first factory at nearby Skogn in 1966.
