Not a single building but three separate sites spread across Kvinnherad municipality, operated under Hardanger og Voss Museum. The main site in Rosendal, Skaalurensamlinga, preserves the legacy of a shipbuilding family that worked this shore for over a century. The Skaaluren yard was founded in 1855 by Torris Knudsen Nes and built roughly 300 vessels over its lifetime, switching from wooden hulls to steel in 1955 and later producing car ferries and chemical tankers. But the older shipbuilding lineage here matters more: an earlier yard on this shore built the sloop Gjoa in 1872, the vessel Roald Amundsen bought in 1901 and sailed through the Northwest Passage in 1903 to 1906 with a crew of six, the first transit in history.
In Uskedalen, about 8 kilometres from Rosendal, Bygdetunet Rod is a farm museum with original buildings in their original locations: a dwelling house, storehouses, stables, a smithy, and a mill, all dating from the 1700s. A cooper's workshop by the fjord reflects the barrel-making trade that was vital for the herring industry sustaining western Norway. The collection holds over 1,500 objects. Nearby, Haugland School Museum preserves a schoolhouse from 1893 with its original furniture and teaching materials, built just after Norway's 1889 Education Act established the modern elementary school system.
The museum sites are open primarily in summer. Rosendal is accessible by car via Rv48 or by express boat from Bergen.
