Krossobanen

45 minutes
Krossobanen is a cable car in Rjukan that takes you up from the valley floor to the mountainside above. It was built for the same reason as the sun mirrors: so the factory workers could get above the valley and see the sun during the months when Rjukan lies in permanent shadow. Sam Eyde, the founder of Norsk Hydro, commissioned it in the 1920s after deciding that his original idea of sun mirrors was impractical. It opened in 1928 and was one of the first cable cars in Northern Europe.

Unfortunately, Krossobanen closed in June 2024 and will not reopen before 2027 or 2028 at the earliest. If you are planning a trip to Rjukan, do not count on the cable car being operational. Check the status before you go.
