Hustad kyrkje

20 minutes
Hustad kyrkje is a small medieval church on the north side of the Inderøy peninsula, built in the 1100s. It sits almost hidden by mature trees just off the road.

The building has stood nearly unchanged since an 1884 restoration. Around the cemetery runs the unusual kirkeplanke, a traditional timber plank fence. This is a rare surviving form of Norwegian medieval churchyard boundary and is worth a walk around the building to look at.

Like the older church at Sakshaug, Hustad kyrkje is owned by Fortidsminneforeningen, the national Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments. It is open to visitors on Sundays in summer, and guided tours can be booked year-round.

The church sits above the lesser-travelled road along the northern shore of Inderøy, away from the main Den Gyldne Omvei loop. If you want to see both medieval churches on the peninsula, plan the detour.
