Herangtunet is a boutique hotel in Heggenes, between Fagernes and Beitostølen, at the end of Heggefjorden lake. In 2003, Dutch designers Marco Robeerst and his wife Marie José left Amsterdam to start a new life here. They converted an old carpentry workshop and ceramics studio into a hotel, arranged around a traditional Valdres farm cluster, a bygdetun. Over the years they built it into something genuinely special.
There are ten rooms, all different. Being designers, they made each one a themed project. The suites are named after places: Aspen, with heavy wood and a feeling that makes you want to light a cigar. New York, modern with a steel bathroom. Rome, colourful. London. The Aspen suite is the most popular and sells out first. People book specific rooms, not just a bed. The restaurant serves a three-course Nordic menu each evening using products from the local butcher, baker, and brewery.
Marie José passed away from cancer in September 2020. Marco continued running the hotel and later appeared on the Dutch TV show Winter vol Liefde. In 2023, he sold Herangtunet to Danielle and Dennis, also from the Netherlands, who left their former lives to continue what Marco and Marie José built.
