Formofossen is a powerful waterfall on the Sanddøla river, dropping a cumulative 34 metres through a narrow rocky gorge just south of Grong along the E6. The main plunge is around ten metres, with additional cascades above and below making up the full drop. A path from the parking area leads down to a sheltered picnic spot at the brink, with views into the gorge and upstream toward the road bridge. Steps and a ladder continue down to river level, built primarily for salmon fishers rather than sightseers; the Sanddøla is one of Namdalen's important salmon rivers, and the pools below waterfalls like this are prime fishing spots. The Namsen river system, including the Sanddøla, was hit hard by Gyrodactylus salaris, a microscopic parasite that can kill up to 98 percent of young salmon in infected rivers. First detected in Norway in the 1970s after fish imports from Sweden, the parasite spread to dozens of rivers. Treatment required poisoning entire stretches with rotenone to eliminate all fish, then restocking from clean populations. Warning signs at Formofossen remind anglers to disinfect their equipment between rivers to prevent further spread.
