Fjellheisen takes you from Tromsdalen to Storsteinen, 421 metres above sea level, in four minutes. The cable car opened in 1961 and runs two gondolas named Seal and Polar Bear, each carrying up to 28 passengers. Departures every half hour.

The view from the top is the best panorama of Tromsø. The city on its island, the bridge, the Arctic Cathedral below, the mountains on Kvaløya to the west, and the open sea to the north. In clear weather you can see the Lyngen Alps to the east.

This is also the best place near the city to see the northern lights. From September to April, on dark clear nights, the elevation above the city's light pollution makes a significant difference. The cable car runs evening hours during aurora season.

There is a cafe and restaurant at the top. From Storsteinen you can also continue hiking up to Fløya or take the Sherpa stairs back down. In summer, taking the cable car up and walking down via the stairs is a popular combination.

Only worth it in clear weather. In fog or heavy cloud, you pay full price to see nothing.
