Øvre Holmegate, better known as Fargegaten (the colour street), is a pedestrian street where every building is painted a different colour. In the early 2000s, hairdresser Tom Kjørsvik wanted to bring life to this part of the city, which was quite dull at the time. Together with artist Craig Flannagan, he devised a plan to paint all the houses in different colours. It took four years to convince every property owner.
The result worked. In 2005 traffic was banned from the street, and restaurants, bars, and small unique shops moved in. It is a popular photo spot, but the charm is real. The street is short; walk it in five minutes, but the shops are worth browsing.
