Falkeriset is the most popular hike near Rauland. Sherpa stonemasons from Nepal built a stone staircase all the way from the parking area to the summit viewpoint at 1,096 metres. The name comes from falcon trapping, which used to take place in the area.
The hike is 2.8 km round trip with 146 metres of elevation gain. It takes about one hour each way. The stone path is easy to follow through mountain birch forest before opening up to bare mountain with panoramic views over the Hardangervidda plateau. On a clear day you can see Gaustatoppen on the horizon.
The trailhead is at a parking area on Kromvikvegen, about 25 minutes drive from Rauland centre. Take Rv362 toward Haukeli, turn right after 4 km toward Kromviki, then follow the gravel road for 11 km to the car park. Season is July to September.
This is a genuine family hike; the trail suits ages 2 to 90 according to the local hiking club. Stay on the stone path to avoid damaging the vegetation.
