Evenes Airport, officially Harstad/Narvik Airport, is the main gateway for visitors to both Lofoten and Vesterålen. It has direct flights to Oslo and is significantly cheaper than the small regional airports at Leknes or Stokmarknes. The drive from Evenes to Svolvær takes about two hours.
The airport shares its runway with Evenes Air Station, a Royal Norwegian Air Force base. This is a NATO Quick Reaction Alert station where F-35 fighter jets are stationed. The base has seen major investment in recent years, including new hangars and infrastructure worth over a billion kroner.
Important: do not photograph the F-35 jets parked at the base. This is a military installation and taking pictures of the aircraft can get you in serious trouble. This applies even from the civilian terminal area. You will likely see the jets from the airport, but keep your camera away from them.
