Dovre National Park

Dovre National Park was established in 2003 to fill the gap between Rondane to the south and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella to the northwest. The park covers 289 square kilometres of alpine tundra between Grimsdalen and Drivdalen, creating a continuous protected corridor across the mountain spine of central Norway.

The Dovrefjell area has enormous symbolic weight in Norway. The oath "Enige og tro til Dovre faller", united and loyal until Dovre falls, was sworn at Eidsvoll in 1814 when Norway adopted its constitution. The mountains represented the backbone of the country, both geographically and spiritually.

The park shares the musk ox population with neighbouring Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella. These animals were reintroduced from Greenland in the 1930s and 1940s, and the combined Dovrefjell herd of around 300 animals is the only wild musk ox population in Scandinavia. Guided safari walks to see them up close run from Kongsvold and Hjerkinn in summer.
