Brekkefossen

💧 Waterfall Valley Sognefjord

Brekkefossen

Brekkefossen is the waterfall visible on the right when driving into Flåm. It's the main hike from the village - about 5 km round trip from the centre, with 155 metres of climbing. Allow around 2 hours.

The walk starts along a paved road following the Flåm river for about 1.5 km, passing farms with grass-roofed buildings. Then comes the steep part: 578 stone steps built by Sherpas, climbing through birch forest to the Raokjen viewpoint. It takes 20-30 minutes to get up if reasonably fit. Some people give up partway.

The view from the top is the main reward - looking down over Flåm, the valley, and the fjord. The waterfall itself is only partly visible from here. The total height of the falls is around 100 metres for what can be seen, though the river drops much further above.

By Norwegian standards, this is a fairly ordinary waterfall - there are hundreds like it around the fjords. But it does offer one of the few viewpoints over Flåm, and it's something to do if waiting between connections. It can get busy on cruise ship days.
