Bondhusbreen Glacier Danger Zone

Open in map
Very Difficult
⚠ Caution required
DO NOT go past the lake toward the glacier. You will die.

Police have banned all access between Bondhusbreen and Bondhusvatnet. A massive bresjø (glacier lake) has formed underneath the glacier. If it breaks through, millions of tonnes of water and ice will tear down the valley in seconds. There is no warning. There is no time to run.

In 2023, the glacier above Blatten bei Naters in Switzerland collapsed exactly like this. Nothing was visible beforehand. No cracks, no sounds. Then the whole thing came down in a matter of seconds, sending a flood of water, ice, and rock through the valley below. Bondhusbreen has the same setup: unstable ice over a growing lake, held back by a moraine that can fail at any moment.

The ban is in effect until at least 1 September 2026. It is a criminal offence to enter the restricted area. The walking path to Bondhusvatnet lake is safe. The danger starts beyond the south end of the lake. Do not continue toward the glacier under any circumstances.
